Intern for Congresswoman Debbie Mucarsel-Powell District Office

September - December 2019

Miami, FL

In the Fall 2019 semester, I had the opportunity to intern for the district office of Congresswoman Debbie Mucarsel-Powell. For the most part, I was under the Constituent Services department. I would answer phone calls coming from different constituents in the district. Depending on the problem, I would open a case for them and direct the case to the corresponding government agency. Most cases in the district were either related to Immigration or Medicare. The office acted as the liaison for the constituent. Even though good news about their cases was not given out all the time, they get an answer faster than if they did by themselves. In my time there I was able to assist in the event the congresswoman had for the Cuban Family Reunification Program (CFRP) bill. This was a huge issue in our district but the constituents were so grateful that something was finally being done about it. Furthermore, I assisted in the Media department as well in the creation of flyers and social media for the Congresswoman.

Intern for Embassy of Islamic Republic of Afghanistan

June - August 2019

Washington D.C.

In summer 2019, I had the opportunity to intern for the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan in Washington D.C. I was under the Media Relations department. I would focus on the image of the Embassy, the Ambassador and of the country of Afghanistan itself. One of my projects of the summer was to create a media plan for the Ambassador. Since she had only been in the office for six months no one really knew about her yet or that she was even a woman, which was shocking for others. I had to focus on Afghan and U.S. relations especially with the talks with the Taliban. I would be the one giving the Ambassador constant briefing about the western news networks and what they are saying about what was currently going on with the talks. I would assist in the Congressional Relations department in advocating for Afghan issues with the U.S. Government.

The Washington Center for Academic Seminars and Internships

June - August 2019

Washington D.C.

The Washington Center (TWC) was the academy that accompanied my summer internship. We would have several events throughout the week such as networking and info sessions. I had two classes as well which included my U.S.-China relations course and the LEAD colloquium. In my U.S.-China relations course, we were taught by a former U.S. Diplomat to China, Mongolia, and Japan. She was able to teach about the current issues that were occurring as well as give her personal insight on the matter such as how to negotiate with those states. My LEAD colloquium was more on professional development. We would access our skills in the workforce and work on ways to aid them such as through LinkedIn. On some days, we would like a career day in which we would pick an event at a government agency or a professional panel to get an insight into the careers we wanted to pursue. I got the chance to go to the FBI headquarters to hear about opportunities in the IC community. Furthermore, TWC put events daily for interns which included resume and interview workshops. This component aided to the professional experience I was having in the U.S. Capitol.
